  1. Patch Testing: Make sure you do a patch test on your skin for sensitivity prior to using on more areas of your body or for a long term period. Make sure to do the patch test on your feet or forearm to ensure you don’t experience irritation like redness, burning, hives or allergic reactions. Keep the essential oil away from your eyes and the insides of your ears or nose.
  2. Pregnant or Nursing Women: These essential oils should be avoided by pregnant or breastfeeding women as it can have an impact on hormonal levels, muscle condition, or nerve functioning. It’s also not appropriate for anyone with epilepsy.
  3. Infants and Children: Keep out of reach from children. Avoid using the essential oils on infants and children under the age of 7.
  4. Ingesting Essential Oils: Even though essential oils are made from all-natural sources, that doesn't mean that they're safe to ingest. Thus, you should avoid ingesting any essential oil.

  1. For Basil Essential Oil: Basil shouldn’t be ingested or used by people with epilepsy. Avoid contact with sensitive areas, ears and eyes.
  1. For Cedarwood Essential Oil: Pregnant women, especially in their first trimester, should use cedarwood with caution. Do not ingest as it can cause nausea, vomiting, and digestive problems.
  1. For Grapefruit Essential Oil: Causes photosensitivity. Avoid sun exposure for at least 12 hours after applying this essential oil on your skin. Apply sunscreen after using blends or formulas using grapefruit oil.
  2. For Bergamot Essential Oil: May cause photosensitivity, so make sure to apply sunscreen after using blends or formulas that use bergamot oil. It can also lower your blood sugar levels way too much that can be potentially harmful. It is best to stop using bergamot oil at least 2 weeks prior to surgery.

How to Use Essential Oils for Skincare

1. How To Use Lemongrass Essential Oil

Insect Repellent

Apply some lemongrass oil (with carrier oil) on exposed skin to prevent bug or insect bites.

Lemongrass Sugar Scrub

Take a fresh stalk of lemongrass, bruise it, then puree in a blender. Put the lemongrass puree and 1 cup of brown sugar into a sterilized glass jar, then mix in 1/2 cup of coconut oil. Add up to 10 drops of lemongrass essential oil. Use whenever you need a nourishing scrub.

Lemongrass Honey Face Mask

In a bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of organic honey, 1/4 cup plain yogurt, 1 tablespoon of bentonite clay, and up to 5 drops of lemongrass essential oil. Apply this mask over your face and neck after cleansing. Leave on for 5 to 15 minutes and rinse with warm water. 

Lemongrass Lotion Bars

Use this lotion bar to provide relief for dry skin. Add 1/2 cup beeswax, 1/2 cup coconut oil, and 1/2 cup shea butter to a glass jar. Place the jar in a saucepan full of water and melt over low heat. When it is finally melted, add 10 - 20 drops of lemongrass essential oil.

Stir the mixture gently and pour into silicone molds. Allow for it to cool, and then unmold. Store these lotion bars in a cool and dry place.

 

2. How to Use Tea Tree Essential Oil

Direct Application

Apply a few drops of tea tree oil to affected areas. The antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of tea tree will help reduce redness, inflammation and swelling. It also eliminates bacteria that causes acne, and can dry up pimples.

One-Step Treatment

Put a few drops of pure tea tree essential oil on cotton swab or cotton ball. Make sure that you dab the oil on affected areas only, and not on the surrounding skin. Leave it overnight and wash your face with warm water when you wake up in the morning.

For Sensitive Skin

If you have sensitive skin, you can dilute tea tree oil and still reap its benefits. To do this, pour 1 tablespoon of distilled water in a small bowl and add 3 - 5 drops of pure tea tree oil. Dip a cotton ball into the bowl to soak up the solution.

Apply on affected areas and leave it on for 20 - 25 minutes, then rinse off with cool water, and gently pat your skin dry with a soft towel. Do this twice a day for 1 to 2 weeks to prevent and treat acne.

Tea Tree Face Mask

This tea tree and aloe vera gel face mask recipe will soothe inflamed skin, dry out pimples, and heal breakouts. It can also lighten your skin and remedy acne scars. To make this face mask, add 3 - 4 drops of tea tree essential oil to 2 teaspoons of fresh aloe vera gel.

Use a cosmetic brush to mix the ingredients. With the same brush, apply on your face and leave it on for 10 - 15 minutes. Rinse off with warm water, and gently pat dry with a soft towel.

 

3. How to Use Basil Essential Oil

Massage

Basil oil can be diluted in a carrier oil and massaged onto the skin.

Application

You can apply basil essential oil with a clean cotton ball and target specific areas on your skin. Mix one to two drops of basil oil with coconut or jojoba oil and apply to the affected area once or twice daily. You can also use it as part of your facial cream or face mask.

Skin Irritations

Basil oil can be applied to minor skin irritations. If you have sensitive skin, dilute this essential oil with fractionated coconut oil. It can also provide pain relief from injuries, burns and bruises.

 

4. How to Use Cedarwood Essential Oil

Scalp Problems

Add several drops of cedarwood essential oil to your shampoo or conditioner if you suffer from seborrhoeic eczema. If the rash persists, add 5 drops of the essential oil to your bathwater. You can also make a scalp massage blend to treat it by mixing 8 drops of cedarwood oil with 4 teaspoons of carrier oil.

For Damaged Skin

Add a few drops of cedarwood oil with coconut oil and massage into damaged skin or wounds.

Firming Skin Massage
