Basil Essential Oil: A Brief History

Basil essential oil is the most popular in Southeast Asia, Central Asia and Europe, and it is also used extensively in the Mediterranean for culinary purposes, such as for making pesto, pasta and salads. Fresh basil herbs are used as well, but some find that basil essential oil is much more effective in flavoring as it is more concentrated and potent. This makes the oil much more powerful than the leaves for medicinal uses in respiratory, muscular, and joint support.

The medicinal parts of the basil plant are the leaves and the seeds. Basil essential oil and all of its beneficial compounds are steam distilled from fresh basil leaves, stems and flowers to form an extract that contains high levels of antioxidants and other beneficial phytochemicals, and is much more beneficial than dried or even fresh leaves.

In history, basil was used in Southeast Asia as Ayurvedic medicine to treat cough, constipation, indigestion, diarrhea and skin illnesses. As Basil is a  natural anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibiotic and diuretic, in the 16th century, the leaves were used to treat migraines and chest infections. Basil essential oil also has proven antioxidant effects that can fight chronic infections and respiratory illnesses like Bronchitis. Mixed with other essential oils such as rosemary or eucalyptus, the blend can help stop infection of the lungs and respiratory tract that can lead to coughing, swelling and pain. It's strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties can likely also benefit heart health, cognitive function and even reduce cancer cell formation.

The basil plant is considered sacred in India as it is such an amazing source of antioxidants, antibacterial agents and anti-inflammatory compounds.
